Non calcium based phosphate binders (NCBPB) have been shown in observational studies to confer a survival benefit when compared with calcium based phosphate binders (CPB). In many jurisdictions NCBPB are prescribed in combination with CPB and it is unclear whether this survival benefit is still present. We conducted a retrospective observational study comparing dialysis patients who received NCBPB with or without CPB and this showed a survival benefit for those receiving NCBPB which was unrelated to phosphate levels..
